Welcome to Penguins Class

Class Teacher: Miss Haddon

General Information

This half term our topic is 'Come on England!'

We will have lots of fun exploring our local area and producing leaflets about it. In English we will be reading 'The Building Boy' and writing our own story based around it.

We love to read in Penguins class!

We have daily comprehension lessons to develop our understanding, inference, prediction and sequencing skills. In these lessons we enjoy reading a range of texts including stories, non-fiction and poems. Once a week, we read one-to-one to an adult during our guided reading session.

Don't forget... whenever you read at home to get your adult to initial in the home section of your planner. When you have finished your book put it in the 'I need a new book' box so you change it for a new, exciting home read book.

Phonics and Spelling

Continuing from Year 1, we have a daily phonics lesson. Each Monday we have a spelling quiz based on the previous week's learning.

Mental Maths

Each Monday we will have a mental maths quiz alongside our spelling quiz.

This half term P.E. will be on Tuesday afternoon. Please ensure you have your full P.E. kit with you.

We all had a great time!

Red Nose Day 2019

British Science Week 2019 Investigations

During British Science week, we investigated how far the germs in sneeze can travel! First we estimated how far we thought the germs could travel before we tested it using a water spray. We then investigated how putting a hand or tissue in front can help to trap germs and stop them from spreading!

On Wednesday 23rd and Wednesday 30th January, we had lots of fun visiting the residents at Larchfield Manor Care Home. While there, we read some of our favourite stories to the residents and made Florence Nightingale lamps.
On Monday 28th January we had a Florence Nightingale workshop in class. We practised bandaging arms into slings and made old-fashioned nurses hats.

On Tuesday 22nd January we visited The Thackray Medical Museum in Leeds. We had lots of fun investigating how the human body works before travelling back in time to 1854 Scutari to help Florence Nightingale to improve hospital conditions there.
